Acts 1:1-8 sets the theme of the book; the restoration of Israel through the second and final exodus. Jesus as forerunner had completed his “departure” (his exodus) out of the “lower world of flesh” and into the higher and heavenly “covenant-world of Spirit”. The promise of the Spirit to Israel was to initiate their corporate exodus, and to empower them to carry the message of kingdom-restoration to all nations beginning in Jerusalem. Under the power and leading of the Spirit, the Church as the remnant of Israel was to follow Christ out of that “present evil age” and into the glory of the “age to come”, His Presence within the veil.
