Peter’s prophecy of the passing away of heaven and earth and the arrival of the new “according to his promise” (2 Peter 3), was simply the reiteration of the promise of Jesus in Mathew 24. Jesus promised that at his “coming” he would destroy heaven and earth and establish them anew in righteousness, in the lifetime of his contemporary generation. The eschatology of 2 Peter 3 is the eschatology of Jesus found in his Olivet Discourse.
