In this weeks lesson we show what the phrase, “Him who is, and who was, and who is to come” would have meant to a first century audience who was familiar with the Old Testament scriptures. By investigating the Old Testament sources (Exodus 3:14, Isaiah 6, Ezekiel 1) as well as the New Testament usage of this phrase (particularly in the book of Revelation), we conclude that the “Revelation of Jesus Christ” was the glorious coming and unveiling of Christ as God to glorify His New Covenant temple and to deliver His New Covenant community out of “spiritual Egypt” through the judgment of Babylon, that is, Old Covenant Jerusalem; the city where Jesus was crucified.
