Jesus’ allusion to Psalms 118:22-23 in his parable of the vineyard (Matthew 21) had significant implications for those in first century Judaism. Through the rejection of Jesus and his message by the scribes and Pharisees, the carnal kingdom of Saul was once again persecuting David and rejecting the coming of the kingdom of God. First century Judaism had become the house and kingdom of Saul that was destined to pass away, and did pass away forever, at the overthrow of the nation, city, and temple in AD70.
