Jesus saw his generation as the “last-days-generation” of the sons of Israel upon whom the warning-prophecy of Numbers 32:15 would come. Israel’s second exodus had begun, and those who refused to “inherit the land” – by “crossing over” into Christ – would once again be abandoned in the wilderness, and there they would perish. The temple and its system had become a spiritual wilderness abandoned by the Lord, in which the unfaithful of Israel would wander for forty years (30-70AD) until that entire generation was consumed.
